Nel 2058 la Terra è vicina al collasso energetico. Per salvare l’umanità, la famiglia Robinson viene scelta per una missione pionieristica: raggiungere il pianeta Alpha Prime e costruire un portale iperspaziale che permetta la colonizzazione umana.
A bordo della nave Jupiter 2 viaggiano il comandante John Robinson, sua moglie Maureen, i figli Judy, Penny e Will, il pilota ribelle Don West e il robot di bordo.

Il sabotatore Dr. Zachary Smith, infiltrato dall’organizzazione terrorista Global Sedition, tenta di compromettere la missione ma rimane accidentalmente intrappolato sulla nave. Il suo intervento provoca un salto iperspaziale fuori controllo che catapulta l’equipaggio in una regione sconosciuta dell’universo.
