La storia segue Moonee, una vivace bambina di sei anni che vive con la madre Halley in un motel economico chiamato The Magic Castle, situato vicino a Disney World. Nonostante la precarietà economica e le difficoltà quotidiane, Moonee trascorre l’estate tra giochi, marachelle e avventure con i suoi amici.

Halley, giovane e ribelle, cerca di sbarcare il lunario con mezzi discutibili, mentre il gestore del motel, Bobby (interpretato da Willem Dafoe), cerca di mantenere l’ordine e proteggere i bambini. Il film mostra il contrasto tra l’innocenza dell’infanzia e la dura realtà sociale, con uno stile realistico e toccante.
